Our senior associate, Thomas E. Heather, on behalf of our German Desk, attended the 9th Symposium “German Desk Latin America,” organized by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Munich Chapter and Alta Bavaria) IHK – Industrie-und Handelskammer – Bayern und Oberbayern in Munich, Germany on May 26th and 27th.
We were the only Mexican law firm participating in the event, which was attended by around 50 people, including German companies, law firms and lawyers from Latin American mainly from Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia.
The topics discussed in the roundtables were related to German investment in Latin America, transatlantic trade, current developments in German corporate sanctions law, general trends in compliance and intellectual property.
Business opportunities were identified with mid-market companies (Mittelstand) interested in expanding their operations in Mexico, because despite the political and economic uncertainty, our country continues to be an open and not overregulated economy in comparison with other large Latin American economies and because of our closeness to the United States and Canada. Among the industries interested and active in Mexico are the well-known German automotive industry, manufacturing, the chemical industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and renewable energy.
